On March 5th, 1965, a church fire occurred at the city of Windrixville, Oklahoma. The fire was at an old abandoned church on Jay Mountain. A field trip had taken place there for some young children. Unfortunately for them, the church caught fire while some of the children were inside. How the fire started is unknown. Luckily for the children, their heroes happened to be strolling by. Johnny Cade, Dallas Winston and Ponyboy Curtis had saw the fire start. Dallas has been charged with less-severe crimes before, Johnny is wanted for murder and Ponyboy as a witness of the murder. Johnny and Ponyboy had rushed in to help get the children out of the church. One by one, they had dropped the children out of a window of the church to safety. Once all of the children were away from the growing fire, they began to head out of the church. Ponyboy had made it out. In the process of leaving the building, his back had caught on fire. At the time, he had been wearing a jacket, which may have saved his life. The jacket had prevented the fire from getting to his skin. Dallas Winston saw the fire on his back as he ran out and hit his back, putting the fire out. This also knocked Ponyboy unconscious and burned Dallas's arm badly. Back in the church, Johnny, who was trying to escape the church, got caught under a falling beam. The beam broke his back and knocked him unconscious. Dallas, noticing Johnny hadn't come out of the building, rushed in to find him. He rescued him him from the collapsing church. All three were put into a hospital to recover. All of the children got away safely thanks to the heroics of these boys.
